Why Tinubu appointed New Executive Directors of Transmission Company Of Nigeria (TCN)

The Nigeria power sector has suffered acute monopoly since the establishment of the defunct NEPA under the electricity act of 1990, which was amended in 1998 withdrawing all of NEPA’s ability to monopolise electricity generation and distribution in Nigeria. TCN

Later on in 2005 NEPA was changed to PHCN to facilitate an enabling environment for private firms to get involved in the management of electricity generation, transmission and distribution under the electricity power sector reform (EPSR) Act signed into law in March 2005.

The Electric reform Act of 2005 did not only result in the creation of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) but also paved the way for the emergence of 11 electricity distribution companies, 6 Generation companies and 1 Transmission Company.

What Is TCN? Is It A New Name For PHCN OR EEDC?

No, the Transmission Company Of Nigeria (TCN) is a Nigeria’s federal government-owned electricity utility firm established under the federal law in 2005, which has its headquarters situated in the federal capital territory, ABUJA.

TCN is a member of the West African Power Pool (WAPP), a unilateral agency charged with improving energy flow across ECOWAS member states through joint funding among member countries for sustainable execution of power projects in each region.

It is, therefore, because of this collective objective that the Transmission Company Of Nigeria (TCN) supplies bulk electricity power to various west African countries like Republic Togo, Republic of Niger and Republic of Benin.

However, as part of president Bola Tinubu’s effective plans to largely improve the quality and quantity of electricity distribution, especially across Nigeria he approved the appointment of four Nigerian professionals to serve as Executive Directors of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The appointed directors shall serve within a renewable term of four years, as was stated by the Special Adviser to the President on March 1, 2024.

These directors are expected, in their capacity as qualified, experienced, and competent men, by the president to offer their best in delivering expansive energy vision and innovative direction during his presidential administration.
