Anambra, Nigeria (EPICSTORIAN) — A statewide manhunt is underway in Anambra after two key suspects in the murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, a member of the State House of Assembly representing Onitsha 1 Constituency, escaped custody.

The duo fled while assisting law enforcement in an operation to recover evidence linked to the case.

Police Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu confirmed the incident on February 18, 2025, and directed specialized units, intelligence officers, and tactical teams to track the fugitives. “Efforts are in place to ensure their immediate re-arrest and prosecution,” he stated.

The investigation had been progressing with the suspects providing information after their gang was implicated in Azuka’s murder.

Officers escorted them to a location where they were expected to identify an individual believed to have played a role in the crime.

During the operation, a suspect linked to receiving stolen property was taken into custody, and two vehicles suspected to have been used in criminal activities were recovered. However, in the midst of the raid, the two detainees managed to escape.

Disciplinary Review Ordered as Search Expands

Following the escape, a full disciplinary review was ordered for officers responsible for handling the suspects. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, police spokesperson, stated, “Any personnel found to have acted negligently will face appropriate action.”

Tracking systems have been activated to prevent the fugitives from avoiding capture. Law enforcement is seeking public cooperation in reporting any useful information.

Search Efforts Intensify Across the State

Checkpoints and surveillance have been increased in key locations as police work to ensure the escapees are found.

“Law enforcement will not relent until these individuals are back in custody,” CP Orutugu emphasized.

Residents have been urged to remain alert and report any suspicious movements as search efforts continue across the state.
