Abuja , EPICSTORIAN – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated 30 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses with a total of 3,000 passenger seats.

The CNG buses, according to the president, are part of efforts to promote the use of cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel sources in the transportation sector.

Tinubu, while speaking at the inauguration in Abuja, expressed his commitment to sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions in the country.

He emphasized the importance of transitioning to cleaner energy sources to combat climate change and improve air quality with the adoption of CNG vehicles, which were locally-manufactured buses “donated to the federal government by the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)”.

The president further stressed that CNG-run vehicles will “save the nation trillions of naira spent on the importation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO)”, becoming a major improvement in the Nigeria’s transportation industry,” president Tinubu said.

”If we can enhance our energy competitiveness and bring about transformative changes like this, we would definitely be able to achieve the prosperity that we are working hard to accomplish for our people.”

The president said CNG vehicles are expected to provide a more cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel-powered or fuel-run vehicles.

They will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality across Nigeria, including major cities like Lagos which is known for its high levels of air pollution.

”These CNG buses are promising and will enhance our transportation system,” he said.

CNG Adoption wil benefit 80 percent of Nigeria’s commercial vehicles

Tinubu said the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) will largely benefit drivers of commercial vehicles, which account for about ’80 percent of the nation’s petroleum demand’.

According to him, several countries, including India “are already reaping the benefits” of introducing CNG as  their new “transportation systems”.

”Countries like India have mandated CNG for all commercial vehicles since 2004. In Nigeria, commercial vehicles make up about 80 percent of our petroleum demand, costing us trillions of naira every month,” president Said.

”The solution is here. We have it. We will work on it. We promise you, definitely, things will get better. Prosperity will be achieved.”

The president in his words of encouragement praised Innoson Motors, the manufacturer of the vehicles, for its commitment to the CNG initiative of his administration, State House reported.

DAPPMAN chairman, Dame Winifred Akpani, in her statement said the vehicles donations were in an effort furtherance to  support president Tinubu’s administration resolve to address Nigeria’s energy challenges.

”This batch of hybrid buses, which DAPPMAN is donating to the federal government, is in furtherance to our support for this administration’s resolve to address Nigeria’s energy challenges,” Ms Akpani said.

”We are proud to note that these buses have been designed, manufactured, and delivered by Innoson Motors, a Nigerian company.”
