EPICSTORIAN — Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman has officially submitted a transfer request to leave Italian club Atalanta, citing what he describes as “broken promises” and a lack of clarity regarding his future with the team.
Ademola Lookman transfer request follows claims of unmet agreements
In a statement shared on his verified X account, Lookman expressed disappointment with Atalanta’s handling of what he said was a prior understanding that he would be allowed to leave if a reasonable offer arrived.
He said he had previously turned down interest from other clubs out of loyalty but now feels it is the right time to move on.
“Despite now receiving an offer in alignment with what I believe had been discussed, sadly, the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand,” Lookman wrote.
He added that after giving “absolutely everything” over three seasons in Bergamo, the recent events had led him to take this decision.
The 26-year-old forward played a key role in Atalanta’s 2024 UEFA Europa League title-winning campaign and has been a consistent performer since his arrival from RB Leipzig in 2022.
Inter Milan’s interest raises stakes in Ademola Lookman transfer talks
Lookman’s request comes amid reported interest from Inter Milan, who have submitted a bid believed to be worth €40 million.
According to football transfer reports, Inter have already reached personal terms with the player, but Atalanta have rejected the proposal.
The Italian side is reportedly seeking a higher valuation, including performance-based bonuses, to compensate for a sell-on clause agreed during Lookman’s original transfer from RB Leipzig.
The clause entitles the German club to 10% of profits up to €20 million and 15% above that figure, which has influenced Atalanta’s firm negotiating position.
Lookman was not included in the squad for a recent pre-season friendly against RB Leipzig, adding to speculation about his possible departure this summer.
Lookman appreciates fan support, seeks resolution
Despite the situation, Lookman thanked Atalanta supporters for their loyalty, describing them as “the heartbeat of this club.”
He said he regretted that his time in Bergamo may end this way but felt compelled to stand up for what he believes is fair.
“The support you have always given me has been incredible, and the bond we have created together is special,” he wrote, adding that he hoped the club would work with him to reach a respectful outcome.
Lookman has made over 80 appearances for Atalanta, scoring decisive goals in both Serie A and European competitions.
He was a standout performer during Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations campaign and remains a key figure for the national team.

Negotiations are expected to continue as the transfer window progresses, with Lookman’s representatives seeking clarity from Atalanta’s hierarchy.
As reported in recent transfer updates, the club has made it clear it will only sell if their full valuation is met.
