Senegal elections: President-elect Bassirou Diomaye Faye vows to lead with humility, make Senegal corrupt-free

Senegal’s president-elect Bassirou Diomaye Faye has during a national speech vowed to govern Senegalese people with humility and fight corruption in the country.

The 44-year-old political newman defeated his running mate of the opposition party, Amadou Ba, becoming the youngest president in the history of Senegal’s presidential leadership.

“I salute the approach of other candidates, who without exception, have honoured every Senegalese tradition even without waiting for the official results to be announced by the authorised state bodies,” the Senegal’s president-elect, Bassirou Diomaye Faye said.

“Their congratulatory messages are eloquent testimony to their greatness. I pledge to govern with humility and transparency, and to fight corruption at all levels.

“I pledge to devote myself fully to the rebuilding of our institutions, and strengthen the foundations of our way of life together.

“This election took place against the backdrop of a pre-electoral crisis that cost lives, injured many, imprisoned many patriots.

The president-elect, Bassirou Diomaye also pledged to prioritise Senegal’s national reconciliation once he takes over power.

“We tend to turn this page and reconcile the hearts of Senegalese people and to work tirelessly to mark and realise the hope raised by the election and project I’m carrying forward.

“I appeal to our African brothers and sisters to work together to consolidate the gains made in the process of building ECOWAS integration, while correcting weaknesses and changing certain methods, strategies and priorities.

“I would like to say to the international community and bilateral and multilateral partners that Senegal will always honour its community.

“It will remain a friendly country and a secure, reliable ally for any partner that engages in virtuous, respectul and mutually productive cooperation.

“I reserve a special mention for one man. I don’t think I need to mention him. It’s president Ousamane Sonko,” Bassirou added.
