A dramatic scene unfolded in the Senate on Thursday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio ordered the removal of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, from the chamber.

The directive followed a dispute over seating arrangements, igniting a tense exchange between the Senate leadership and the opposition senator.

The altercation began when Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno reported that Natasha had refused to vacate her designated seat despite being reassigned.

According to Monguno, the seat changes were necessary to accommodate shifts caused by two opposition senators who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Did Akpabio Have the Authority to Remove Natasha?

Citing Senate Order 24, Monguno asserted his authority as Chief Whip to manage seating arrangements. He further referenced Order 6, which grants the Senate President discretion to reassign senators’ seats at any time.

Monguno emphasized that senators must speak from their assigned seats, reinforcing Akpabio’s ability to deny recognition to anyone who does not comply.

Natasha, however, challenged the ruling by invoking Order 10, arguing that her privileges as a senator had been violated.

She accused Akpabio of deliberately sidelining her by blocking her bills from advancing beyond the first reading and preventing her from contributing to legislative discussions.

“You are silencing my voice and denying me the right to represent my people,” she protested. “The worst you can do is suspend me, but I will continue serving Kogi Central and the women of Nigeria.”

Did the Senate Consider Suspending Natasha?

As tensions escalated, Natasha alleged that Akpabio had subjected her to discrimination, humiliation, and derogatory language. She stood her ground, refusing to leave her seat.

“I am not afraid of you,” she declared. “Do whatever you deem fit, but I will not be silenced.”

Akpabio called for order and appeared to consider suspending Natasha. However, the situation took another turn when several senators, including Senator Austin Akobundu, intervened.

The lawmakers urged Natasha to remain calm and prevented the Sergeant-at-Arms from forcibly removing her.

How Was the Dispute Resolved?

The standoff continued as other senators appealed to Akpabio to defuse the situation. After a prolonged impasse, Natasha ended her protest, allowing plenary proceedings to resume.

The confrontation has raised concerns about internal tensions within the Senate and the treatment of minority party members.

It remains unclear whether further disciplinary measures will be pursued against Natasha following the heated exchange.
