Nigeria to restrengthen partnership with IITA, World Bank, IFPRI on Food security programme

The vice president of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, on behalf of the federal government briefed the public on the outcome of his meeting with a delegation from IITA, World Bank, and IFPRI on Wednesday.

In a bid to provide solutions to Africa’s food insecurity African leaders meet regularly with a delegation from the IITA, World Bank, and IFPRI to discuss vital issues with regard to providing working agricultural programme.

Mr Shettima, who represented president Tinubu at the meeting in Abuja, said they had “fruitful deliberations” that centered around their “resolve to form a formidable partnership on innovative agricultural practices”.

He also noted that the partnership on “agricultural innovation” would not only benefit Nigeria but widely cut across sub-Saharan African region.

Speaking, in his own words, Shettima said, “Today in my office at the Presidential Villa, I received on a courtesy visit, a delegation from the IITA, World Bank, and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

“We had fruitful deliberations which culminated in our resolve to form a formidable partnership on innovative agricultural practices to address food insecurity in Nigeria and the broader sub-Saharan African region.”

The partnership also involves effective climate management and provision of improved agricultural seedlings to African farmers.

“I informed the delegation about the mantra of our agricultural programme which is focused on increasing yield, and the IITA is in a vantage position to assist not just Nigeria but sub-Saharan Africa in repositioning the agriculture ecosystem through smart agriculture, climate-resilient agriculture, and improved seedlings,” he said.

Shettima also praised the delegates from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), emphasising on their agency’s significant role so far in contributing hugely to the pursuit of food security through Agricultural programmes and innovations in Nigeria.

“I noted the significant role of the IITA established in 1967 in shaping Nigeria’s agricultural landscape,” he added.
