(EPICSTORIAN) – An approximately $52.88 million in forfeited corruption proceeds has been recovered by the Federal Government of Nigeria following a groundbreaking agreement reached with the United States government.

This deal, announced on January 11, 2025, represents a significant milestone in the ongoing global fight against corruption and the recovery of misappropriated assets, according to a report by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

The funds, forfeited under the U.S. Department of Justice’s Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, were the result of extensive investigations and court proceedings concluded in 2023.

The recovered assets include luxury items such as the superyacht Galactica Star and prime real estate in California and New York. These properties were purchased with illicit funds linked to bribery and money laundering schemes involving former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

“Today’s agreement demonstrates our shared commitment to combating corruption and promoting accountability,” said Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Acting Spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Collaborative Investigations

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section, the FBI’s International Corruption Unit, and the IRS-Criminal Investigation division led the efforts to seize these assets. Nigerian authorities provided critical assistance, reflecting a robust bilateral partnership.

“The U.S. remains resolute in its mission to dismantle corruption networks globally,” said a U.S. Department of Justice representative, highlighting the success of their collaboration with Nigerian agencies.

The repatriated $52.88 million will be channeled into critical developmental projects in Nigeria. These include nationwide electrification programs and international initiatives targeting terrorism. Both governments have committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of the funds.

“This is not just about recovering stolen wealth,” remarked a senior Nigerian government official. “It’s about redirecting these resources toward national development and improving the lives of our citizens.”

Strengthened Bilateral Relations

Beyond financial recovery, the agreement underscores the deepening partnership between Nigeria and the U.S. in addressing corruption, fostering good governance, and advancing sustainable development.
