The Vice president of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima has expressed concern for the need of equipping officers of the Nigeria police force with the required training for effective modern policing.
He noted this at the maiden edition of the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations, where he represented president Ahmed Bola Tinubu— highlighting the importance of the Nigeria police officers’ expertise in carrying out the “arduous task of modern policing”.
In honour of the Nigeria police officers, President Tinubu earlier on Monday declared the first week of April as police week and the last day of the week as National Police Day, a declaration he made public through the office of the Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja.
In his official statement on the specifics of the event at the maiden award and commendations organised by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Abuja, the Vice president said, “Last night, I represented my boss, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the maiden edition of the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations where deserving men and women of the force were honoured.
“In my remarks, I identified complete overhaul of institutional mentality and memory of police officers as fundamental in our administration’s ongoing bid to transform the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) into a modern, professional and accountable institution.
“This explains why since coming on board last year, our administration has initiated wide-ranging reforms to revitalize the nation’s police force.
“I also stressed the need to engage men and women of the force in training and capacity-building to equip them with the expertise required to carry out the arduous task of modern policing, and explained why the Federal Government approved the first week of April as police week and the last day of the week as National Police Day,” he added.
