Abuja, EPICSTORIAN – The U.S government has through the office of the USAID, in response to the recent outbreak of Monkeypox in Nigeria, donated 10,000 doses of Jynneos vaccine  to the country, as this marks a significant contribution aimed at aiding the country’s efforts to contain and manage the spread of the disease.

The donation, consisting of 10,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine, marks a crucial development in international cooperation to fight against monkeypox and other related infectious diseases.

According to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID, represented by Ambassador Richard Mills at the vaccines donation event held in Abuja, which was handed over to the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), this was a ‘timely donation meant for the most vulnerable across Nigeria’.

“We are pleased to know that this is a timely donation that will reach the affected areas across the country and those who are most vulnerable to mpox mpox infection,” mr Mills said. 

Nigeria’s government encouraged to harness domestic resources to secure more monkeypox vaccines:

Speaking on the occasion,  Mr Mills said that the government of Nigeria would be ‘better off utilizing its own domestic resources to produce more vaccines and make them available to affected people across all areas of the country’.

 “We encourage the Government of Nigeria to continue to mobilize domestic resources to secure more vaccines to combat mpox,” he added.

The Jynneos vaccine, approved by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID , is designed to prevent smallpox and mpox (formerly called “Monkeypox”)  in adults aged 18 and older who are at risk of contracting the infectious disease.

Reacting to a question of its safety for users, Ambassador Mills said , “Yes, the vaccine is safe. Safety tests have been conducted during clinical trials, and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control reviewed the results of these trials before granting approval for the use of the vaccines in Nigeria.

NPHCDA’s DG addressed the USAID Agency at the official handover  ceremony of the Monkeypox vaccine Donation:

Dr Muyi Aina, Executive Director of NPHCDA, thanked the government of the United States for donating Jynneos vaccine to Nigeria and assisting in the providing solutions to the Infectious disease prevention.

Aina emphasised the Federal Government’s commitment to improving public health in Nigeria in line with international health crisis response .

He said, “Nigeria experienced a significant outbreak of Mpox in 2022, but the recent resurgence of cases has underscored the virus’s ongoing threat.

“The declaration by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that Mpox is a Public Health Emergency of International Concern has further emphasised the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures.”

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (ACDC) on August 13 said noted that monkeypox is a  “public health emergency of continental security”, and all attention most be focused on dealing with the current spread of the virus across Africa. International health crisis response

ACDC , in a previous report on Friday, said 40 cases of monkeypox out of 830 estimated number of infected persons nationwide has been confirmed.
