(EPICSTORIAN) — Microsoft is officially shutting down Skype in May 2025, marking the end of an era for the once-dominant video calling platform.
The decision is part of a strategic shift as the company consolidates its consumer communication services under Microsoft Teams.
At its peak, the live-video-call platform boasted over 300 million users, revolutionizing global communication. However, user numbers declined in recent years, with Microsoft reporting just 36 million active users in 2023.
Teams Overshadows Skype Market Share
The rise of competing platforms such as Zoom, WhatsApp, and Microsoft’s own Teams has significantly diminished Skype’s market share.
Confirming the shutdown, Microsoft stated: “In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub.”
Users will be directed to Microsoft Teams, which now includes a free version designed to replace platform’s functionality.
Microsoft assured a smooth transition, stating: “We look forward to continuing to support people’s everyday connections, starting by making it easy to log into Teams with their Skype account.”
Skype, launched in 2003, was a pioneer in VoIP technology, offering free video and voice calls long before mobile apps became mainstream.
Acquired by Microsoft for $8.5 billion in 2011, the service remained a key communication tool but struggled to maintain its dominance amid growing competition.
Industry analysts note that Microsoft’s focus on Teams reflects changing communication trends, with workplaces and casual users alike favoring integrated platforms over standalone calling apps.
Teams, originally developed for business collaboration, now provides messaging, video calls, and group chat features, making it a direct successor to Skype.
The transition raises questions about how long-term users will adapt, particularly those who rely on it for personal or international communication.
Microsoft has yet to outline the full migration process but is expected to provide further details in the coming months.
