Lekki residents, stakeholders grieve for death of VGC chairman, Mbelu

Business associates and Lekki residents have paid homages to the family of late Chairman of VGC, Mr Gihan Mbelu.

Mbelu was the chairman of Victoria Garden City Property Owners Residents Association (VGCPORA) before his sudden demise.

They spoke well of his character, where the mourners said Mbelu was a true leader with vision, describing him as an “environmental sustainability enthusiast”, who as well had the interest of “youth development” at heart”.

Speaking at his organized night of tributes held on Tuesday, the grief-stricken residents and business stakeholders recalled the news of his passing on April 26 after his body was deposited to the morgue.

The 42-year-old man was, according to a source, found dead in his car within the community after slamming the door to get himself a bottle of water and energy drink.

Mbelu was not only the Chairman, VGCPORA, but was vice president, Lekki Estate Residents and Stakeholders
Association (LERSA), NAN reported earlier.

Noheem Adams, Majority Leader of Eti-Osa Constituency 1, and others, said Mr Mbelu was the type of young leaders he had envisaged becoming governors or presidents of Nigeria.

“The shoes he is leaving behind are too big to be filled and today would be recorded as the saddest day in 2024 for me,”Adams griefed.

“The kind of person he was, I had envisioned that he would one day be one of those to lead the country due to his immense leadership capabilities.

Alhaji Sulyman Bello, President, LERSA, said Mr Mbelu was a rare make of his kind in our generation.

“As long as it was for humanity, Gihan would give it a try as he was a very oriented problem solving
individual,” Hello said.

“His type is not very available in every generation or even a lifetime and he would be sorely missed
by us alI.”

Mrs ldunu Oyebelu, Chairperson, Board of Trustees, VGCPORA, praised the late Mbelu for his spirit of hard work, value, and commitment to service.

He said, “Mbelu’s leadership was marked by a deep sense of purpose and compassion”

“May his memory serves as a source of comfort and make us uphold the values that he embodied particularly his spirit of service.

“We will continue to build on the foundation he laid.”

Mrs Morufat Yusuff, General Manager, VGCPORA, spoke on his determination to  Help youths get drug-free, using the environment within the VGC community.

“He also facilitated efficient access control, identified opportunities to optimise expenses was deeply committed to the safety and wellbeing of all VGC residents,” she said.

“He increased security surveillance and we had commenced installation of CCTV cameras with 150 installed and 64 ongoing to be commissioned in August.

“He forged partnership with government entities to resolve issues, mitigated flood risks and this is such a sad occurrence that our hearts cant fathom. He would be sorely missed.”

Mrs Jane Phillip-Odey, Secretary, VGC, encourage fellow mourners to always remember Mbelu’s exemplary life and always uphold his memory.

“Let us honour his memory, cherish the time we had with him as we pay tribute to him who would forever be in our hearts and memories,” Mr Jane said.

Mr Adejo Adehi, Head, VGC BasketbalIcommunity, also offered his  own tribute.

“You would be deeply missed but your memory would live on and we pray you find comfort that your legacy would continue to flourish,” he said.

Mbelu’s brother, Mr Ishan Mbelu, also on behalf of the family appreciated everyone for their presence at the night, including the of tributes and the VGC community.
