(EPICSTORIAN) – Prime Minister Keir Starmer has declared 2024 a “year of change,” vowing transformative action to improve the UK’s economy and quality of life.
In his first New Year address as prime minister, Starmer celebrated his government’s achievements since Labour’s historic election victory in July but acknowledged that “there is still so much more to do.”
Speaking with optimism, Starmer outlined his “Plan for Change,” a comprehensive strategy focused on delivering tangible improvements. “We have a clear plan for change: 1.5 million new homes, a more secure energy system, dramatically reduced waiting lists, and more cash in your pocket—wherever you live,” he said.
Economic and Social Reforms
Central to Starmer’s vision is bolstering economic security and public services. He announced plans to raise the minimum wage to a record level and highlighted a £25 billion investment in the NHS aimed at cutting hospital waiting times. Additionally, he emphasized significant progress in tackling crime, noting a 20% increase in the deportation of foreign criminals.
“Our focus is on the security of working people. That is the purpose of this government,” Starmer asserted. He also pointed to investments in clean energy as vital to ensuring the UK’s energy security and combating climate change.
Challenges and Leadership Resolve
Starmer’s message comes amid mounting criticism of Labour’s management of the economy and direction. Despite these challenges, he maintained an optimistic tone, reflecting on a “year of changing Britain for the better” and promising continued action. “This fight for change will define this year, next year, and indeed—every waking hour of this government,” he declared.
Acknowledging the hardships many Britons face, he said, “I know it’s hard to think about the future when you’re fighting to get through the week. Until you can look forward with confidence in Britain’s promise and prosperity, this government will fight for you.”
Opposition Reactions
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, in her New Year message, acknowledged the challenges within her party, describing 2024 as a “period of change.” She stated, “This process of renewal will be a long-term project. Things may be bumpy, but we’re committed to doing things differently.”
Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called on Labour to “be much bolder” in addressing the UK’s challenges. He emphasized that the UK has the talent and resources to thrive but said Labour’s efforts need to match the scale of the issues.
Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, criticized decades of political leadership, arguing, “We’re in societal and economic decline, and most people are getting poorer every year.” Farage called for stricter border controls and measures to combat the rising cost of living.
Looking Ahead to 2025
Starmer framed 2025 as a pivotal year to consolidate progress, expressing hopes of rediscovering Britain’s potential. “The victories of the past remind us of the strength we must rebuild today,” he remarked, referencing the upcoming 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ Days.
As his message concluded, Starmer reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transformation. “Here’s to a year of changing Britain for the better,” he said, inspiring hope for the future despite the hurdles ahead.
