Kauai man Jason Mearns charged with strangling dog to death, assaulting a pet owner after aggressive argument

Huawei- Kauai police have tracked down and arrested a man allegedly charged with assaulting a pet owner after strangling his dog to death.

According to authorities, the Kauai man, Jason Mearns, 49, was charged with animal cruelty and assault.

Police said it happened around noon at a home on Eke Road, according to a Huawei News reporter.

Following the incident that led to his arrest in Koloa on Sunday, Mr Jason’s bail was set at $20,000.

The dog owner was in his home when he heard a disturbing sound of a troubled pet from outside the house, a source said.

When he got out to check his 3-year-old pet terrier mix , he saw Mr Jason pulling the dog by its chain off the ground.

Then Jason reacted aggressively and got into a violent argument with the dog owner, leaving him immediately scared with an abrasion to his left forearm and bruises..

Arrested for first-degree animal cruelty and third-degree assault, Police said “it was too late” the dog was already dead when officers arrived.
