Kansas City shooting: 21 injured and 1 dead near Super Bowl parade

21 people have been wounded and one person was dead in a shooting in Missouri at the end of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade. Kansas City shooting

Eight victims who were in near-dead condition were immediately treated and seven others who had suffered fatal injuries, according to Officials

The Police, in an effort to tackle those behind the city’s mayhem, said they have arrested three suspects who were assumed to be in connection to the shooting. Kansas City shooting

The shots were fired west of Union Station, the train station in downtown Kansas City, which was where the parade ended at around 14:00 local time (20:00 GMT) and thousands of fans had gathered to watch the festivities, BBC reported.

A source said the first shots were fired while the Kansas City Chiefs players were still on a stage.

According to Kansas City Police Chief, Stacey Graves, officers aptly responded to the situation after the gunshots and detectives on the scene immediately opened an investigation. Kansas City shooting

The Fire Department also responded to action, to give help to the wounded victims and provide any medical attention that was necessary.

Reporting, at a news conference on Wednesday, Graves also said a total of 22 people were hit by gunfire, which killed one of them; and three suspects were arrested. Kansas City shooting

Authorities said there were more than 800 police on the scene to monitor the parade before the shooting incident .

A report from a local radio station revealed that one of its female DJs, Lisa Lopez, was killed in the ghastly shooting at the Super bowl.

The surviving victims were transported to three local hospitals, officials said, with the immediately life-threatening cases taken to hospital within 10 minutes of the shooting, according to a report by a local source.

Chief nursing officer at Mercy Hospital, Stephanie Meyer said Nine children, aged 6 to 15, with gunshot bleeding wounds are being treated at the Hospital.

“The one word I would just use to describe what we saw and how they felt when they came to us was fear,” she said.

However, the city police did not release any names of  the victims and any information about the suspects who were arrested, or the cause of the shooting.  Kansas City shooting

A law enforcement source told CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, that the shooting appeared to be the result of an argument that turned violent. The source said it was not terrorism related, according to a statement obtained by the BBC.

Meanwhile, officials said they are investigating and gathering evidence to unravel the motives behind the shooting and requested for any witnesses or persons with information to get in touch with the  police.

Kansas city’s Super Bowl celebration turned into chaos

This little known American city saw its worst moment ever as the shooting had begun when they celebrated a second straight Super Bowl win by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Quinton Lucas, the Kansas city’s mayor,  said he and his family and others who heard the sound of gunfire had to run to safety. Kansas City shooting

“We went out today like everyone in Kansas City looking to have a celebration,” said Mr Lucas.

“I was there with my wife, I was there with my mother. I never would’ve thought that we, along with Chiefs players, along with fans, hundreds of thousands of people, would be forced to run for our safety today.” Kansas City shooting

The Kansas City Chiefs organisation said, in a statement, however the Wednesday incident was “truly saddened” and meant horror for most families, its players, coaches and staff and their families were found safe.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling, one of the receivers for the Chiefs, said on his social media handle after the tragic incident that he would love to help the victims with recovery any way he could. 

“I want to make sure they’re doing ok,” he said. Kansas City shooting

“But I would love to help them out any way I can and get them some stuff from the team to help with the recovery,” said Mr Valdes-Scantling.

Valdes-Scantling said that there were enough security measures put in place in the city, and this should make the public consider a new path towards fortifying the city’s security .

He said in spite of  hundreds of police officers present at the scene before the shooting, the incident still occurred because of the presence of actors with guns. Kansas City shooting

The US president Joe Biden, in a statement, again related the issue of gun violence in America.

“Today’s events should move us, shock us, shame us into action,” the president said, calling for a ban on rifles in America and “more stringent”  gun reform. Kansas City shooting
