Guatemala City (EPICSTORIAN) – A tragic bus crash in Guatemala City left at least 30 people dead after the vehicle veered off a highway bridge, plummeting 65 feet into a ravine.
Survivors remain trapped as rescue teams work against time to recover bodies and assist the injured, Reuters reported.
Bus Falls from Puente Belice Bridge
The accident happened on Monday morning when the bus, traveling on a major commuter route, lost control and plunged from Puente Belice, one of Guatemala City’s busiest highway bridges.
The vehicle landed in a ravine filled with polluted water, making rescue efforts more difficult.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, pulling survivors from the wreckage. Images released by Guatemala’s fire department show the bus partially submerged, surrounded by debris and victims. The difficult terrain and contaminated water slowed recovery efforts.
Guatemalan President Declares National Mourning
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo mobilized the army and disaster response teams to aid in rescue operations. He expressed condolences to victims’ families, acknowledging the grief caused by the disaster.
“I stand in solidarity with the families of the victims who woke up to heartbreaking news. Their pain is my pain,” Arévalo said. He later declared three days of national mourning in memory of those who lost their lives.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. Preliminary reports point to mechanical failure or driver error as possible factors. Puente Belice, known for heavy traffic and aging infrastructure, has raised safety concerns in the past.
Rescue teams continue working to locate any remaining survivors. Medical personnel are treating injured passengers, while officials work on identifying the deceased.
Witnesses Describe Horror at the Scene
