The governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, on Wednesday, inaugurated a caretaker committee of chairmen for the Rivers State 23 Local Government Areas .
This decision, according to Fubara, was carried out in response to the Rivers State crisis “after the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past Chairmen”.

Rivers State’s Constitution:
Fubara informed the committee that it was unconstitutional within the State’s law to allow for the elongation of any Charman’s tenure after it had expired.
He charged them with good conscience, highlighting on the need for them to meet the expectation of the people.
“As nature abhors a vacuum, our action is to ensure that we don’t give vent to tenure elongation which is alien to our constitution.
“Upon swearing-in, I charged the caretaker chairmen to protect the interest of their people in the grassroots leadership and to promote peace and order in their domains.
Writing on X, the governor also ordered for the audit of the performance and accounting records of the past 23 local governments’ leadership.
He said he was concerned about the “utilization of funds within the period, stressing his inclination for accountable leadership.
“As a government that strongly adhers to accountability, I also ordered for the audit of the activities of the administration of the 23 Local Government Areas in the past three years in order to ascertain the proper utilization of funds within the period,” the governor stated.
