

First Civilian Governor Of Abia State and Ex-Federal Minister, Ogbonnaya Onu Is Dead
A former Governor of Abia State, and an ex-Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, who succeeded the military administrator Frank Ajobena, is dead.
Onu became the first Executive Governor of Abia State, having assumed public office in January, 1992 and led up untill November, 1993 under the NRC Party
Mr Onu who died on Thursday morning at a renowned hospital in Abuja, at the age of 72, also was the former chairman of the extinct All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP).
“First first Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, passed away this morning in an Abuja hospital. Good Night, Dr. Onu. May your soul Rest In Peace. Amen!” Jackson Udeh commented on the report of his death.
Abia State, at different times, had four military administrators followed by civilian governors, and they are listed below including their names, years of service and political parties.
Past Governors of Abia State
1. Frank Ajobena: He was a military administrator ruling Abia State from August 28, 1991 to January 1992 and had none political affiliations ( he served under no political part).
2. Ogbonnaya Onu: He became the first Executive Governor of Abia State, having assumed public office in January, 1992 and led up untill November, 1993 under the National Republican Convention (NRC) created by General Ibrahim Babangida and scrapped by General Dani Abacha in the late 1993
3.Chinyere Ike Nwosu: He was a Military administrator ruling as the Abia State governor under military regime from December 9, 1993 to September 14, 1994 and the military governor Chinyere Ike Nwosu served under no political party.
4.Temi Ejoor: He was a military administrator governing Abia State from September 14, 1994 to August 22,1996, and had served under no political party.
5. Moses Fasanya: He was a military administrator leading Abia State from August 22, 1996 to August, 1998 and had served under no political party.
6. Anthony Obi: He was a military administrator of Abia State government leading from August, 1998 to May 29, 1999 and had served under no pressure party.
7.Orji Uzor Kalu: The currently serving chief WIP of the Nigerian National assembly, Orji Uzor Kalu, was the Executive Governor of Abia State starting from May 29, 1999 to May 29, 2007 and had ruled under People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Orji Uzor Kalu also before the end of his second term was elected under PPA on PDP platform, having decamped to Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA).
8. Theodore A. Orji: He was the Executive Governor of Abia State from May 29, 2007 to May 29, 2015 and had been elected the Progress Peoples Alliance (PPA).
9.Okezie Ikpeazu: Ikpeazu was elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Executive Governor of Abia State on May 29, 2015 and ruled until up May 29, 2023, succeeding Alex Chioma Otti.
10. Alex Chioma Otti: Alex Otti, as he is generally called, was elected under the Labour Party (LP) as the Executive Governor on May 29, 2023 and has remains the incumbent governor as at the time of writing.
