Abuja, Nigeria – Finland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Sanna Selin, has revealed that the actions of pro-Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa have significantly strained diplomatic relations between the two nations, stating is recent arrest in Finland has helped restore trust and cooperation.
Selin made this assertion on Friday, January 24, while presenting her Letters of Credence to President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja. She reaffirmed Finland’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with Nigeria and praised collaborative efforts to address security concerns.
“Simon Ekpa has been hindering bilateral relations. However, the cooperation between our two countries is progressing well, with the National Security Adviser providing all necessary evidence,” she stated.
Tinubu Applauds Finland’s Firm Action
President Tinubu, in his response, commended Finland for taking decisive action against Ekpa, reiterating that Nigeria would not tolerate acts that undermine national unity. He emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to preserving the country’s sovereignty.
“I must thank you for your stance on human rights in Nigeria and your cooperation in addressing the Simon Ekpa issue. Nigeria is indivisible. We have endured turbulent times and remain steadfast in preventing terrorism,” Tinubu declared.
He further called for continued collaboration between both nations in addressing security threats that could destabilize the region.
Ekpa Faces Terror-Related Charges in Finland
Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Government in Exile (BRGIE), was arrested in Finland following investigations by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). Authorities have accused him of using his platform to incite violence in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
The NBI confirmed that they had formally requested his remand on charges of public exhortation to commit offenses with terrorist intent. The agency stated:
“The police suspect that the individual has been operating from Finland in a manner that has led to violent actions against civilians and public officials in Southeast Nigeria.”
Ekpa has been a controversial figure, often advocating for sit-at-home protests and other disruptive activities that have resulted in unrest in the region.
IPOB Disowns Ekpa Amid Growing Scrutiny
Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has publicly distanced itself from Simon Ekpa, insisting that he is not a recognized member of their organization.
IPOB, which has long campaigned for Biafra’s independence, accused Ekpa of exploiting the separatist movement for personal gain. The group’s spokesperson stated:
“He thrives on manipulation, deception, and extortion, using the Biafra struggle as a pretext to mislead and exploit innocent people.”
This development highlights shift of blame, as IPOB has often been allegedly linked with Ekpa’s activities despite internal disagreements. The group’s formal disavowal may indicate a strategic repositioning amid increasing international pressure.
Strengthening Diplomatic and Security Cooperation
The arrest of Simon Ekpa, according to both diplomats, has set the stage for closer collaboration between Nigeria and Finland, particularly in tackling transnational threats.
Speaking further on strengthening ties, ambassador Selin highlighted Finland’s willingness to work alongside Nigeria in critical areas, including security, technology, and governance reforms.
President Tinubu, in his closing remarks, emphasized the need for global partnerships in upholding democratic stability and national security, stating:
“The rule of law remains the bedrock of our democratic values. We will continue to engage with international partners to ensure stability and growth.”
