Transportation fares hike: Egypt increases fuel price ahead of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) third review of its expanded $8 billion loan programme for the country, which is set for 29 July, 2024.

Egypt increases fuel price ahead of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) third review of its expanded $8 billion loan programme for the country, which is set for 29 July, 2024.

Cairo, EPICSTORIAN –  A significant ransportation fare adjustment has been observed by daily travelers in Egypt following fuel price increase.

Microbus fare adjustment, according to Media reports, now ranges from 50 piastres to EGP 1 for most routes and from EGP 1.5 to EGP 1.75 for longer routes.

Fares paid by bus travelers increased by EGP 1, where all air-conditioned buses upped by EGP 2, including white taxi tariffs which were also raised in all governorates.

As a result of the new fares adjustment, the taxi metre starts counting at EGP 9.5 instead of EGP 8.5 for the first kilometre, and each additional kilometre covered will cost EGP 4.5 as against EGP 4 previous amount.

The first-hour waiting time became EGP 21, with EGP 10.50 for each additional hour.

Municipal authorities in Cairo have mandated displaying of banners and stickers at all transportation terminals to inform the public about the new fares, the reports added.

To receive public complaints on price increases, the responsible agencies offered two hotlines (114 and 15496)

Earlier Thursday, the government raised prices by 10-15 percent on most fuel products, the second hike in 2024, reported

This move came hours after Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that the government plans to end subsidies and reach a break-even point by December 2025

The prime minister noted that government tends to achieve this by gradually increasing the prices of fuel products and all services.
