

Justice Gonçalves assumes leadership of ECOWAS Court of Justice, heralding a new era in regional justice.
Abuja (EPICSTORIAN) Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Gonçalves has been elected as the President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, marking a new era for the regional court.
Gonçalves will serve a two-year term at the ECOWAS Court of Justice, succeeding Justice Edward Amoako Asante, who held the position for six years, beginning on July 31, 2018.
Justice Gonçalves’ election was carried out by the court’s five-judge panel, reported a Nigerian media source.
His swearing-in ceremony took place on October 6, 2022, in Guinea-Bissau, officiated by President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, the former President of the ECOWAS Conference of Heads of State and Government.
Gonçalves to lead ECOWAS Court of Justice with Koroma as Vice-President.
Gonçalves’ role as President is set for a non-renewable four-year term, providing leadership in upholding the rule of law across the ECOWAS region.
In addition to Justice Gonçalves’ appointment, Justice Ricardo Sengu Mohamed Koroma was elected as the Vice-President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

This new leadership team is expected to steer the court through significant regional legal challenges, continuing its crucial role in interpreting ECOWAS treaties and ensuring the protection of human rights within the Community.
The ECOWAS Court of Justice has long been a pillar of legal authority in West Africa, with its decisions channelled toward shaping the legal structure across the region.
As Justice Gonçalves takes the helm, the court’s expected to focus on justice and regional cooperation among ECOWAS member states.
