Detained Nigerian security official, DCP Abba Kyari, over drug-related crime gets released on bail

The former Nigerian deputy commissioner of police , Abba Kyari,who was detained for stowing way 15kg  illegal drugs after the arrested of suspects, has been granted bail by the Abuja Federal High Court.

The former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, was granted two weeks’ bail after being detained for 27 months in custody.

The court expects Kyari to conclude his mother Yachilla Kyari’s burial within the two weeks granted period of his bail.

The Federal High Court also scheduled Friday, May 31,  for a final decision on Kyari’s bail application.

Arrested on February 14, 2022, the estwhile Deputy Commissioner of Police, after exhausting his two weeks bail , as would be determined by the court, shall return to face the drug-related charges filed against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Recall that the mother died in the early hours of Sunday, May 5, 2024, and was survived by 10 children (five males and five females), including Abba, who is the eldest son, PUNCH said.

Among two other police officers suspend alongside DCP Abba Kyari in 2022 by the Police Service Commission were  Sunday Ubua and James Bawa, who were also involved in the crime for personal hidding the confiscated 15kg of the illegal drug.

“The Police Service Commission has suspended assistant commissioner of police, ACP Sunday Ubua and assistant superintendent of police, ASP James Bawa from the exercise of the powers and functions of their respective Offices with effect from Monday, 14th February 2022,” the PSC said in a statement.

Intelligence investigators wth NDLEA also discovered that Kyari had dirty connections with an international drug organization.

Femi Babalola, spokesperson for the NDLEA, alleged that Kyari and his Intelligence Response Team arrested some drug traffickers who arrived in the country from Ethiopia with 25kg of cocaine but took 15kg of the seized substance for themselves, PUNCH said.
