President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to address Nigerians at 7 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, as part of the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations, which mark 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria.
The announcement was made by Abdulhakeem Adeoye, a representative of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day.
The committee emphasized the importance of the event, noting that the presidential address would set the tone for the day’s national reflections.
The Thursday morning speech will formally address Nigerians on the progress, challenges, and direction of Nigeria’s democracy.
Tinubu’s Morning Broadcast to Address Nigerians on National Progress
Following the national broadcast, a joint session of the National Assembly will be held at 12 noon.
Lawmakers from both chambers will convene for a commemorative sitting that reinforces the administration’s message of unity and democratic consolidation.
Later in the day, the Federal Government has scheduled a public lecture at 4 p.m., themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”
The event will take place at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, highlighting Nigeria’s efforts at institutional reforms.
Tinubu to Address Nigerians Without Traditional Parade Festivities
This year’s Democracy Day, however, comes with a noticeable change: the cancellation of the annual parade, traditionally held to mark the event.
No official explanation was given for the decision, leaving observers curious about the government’s shift in celebratory tone.

Democracy Day was rescheduled from May 29 to June 12 in 2018, honoring the legacy of MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 presidential election, which was widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest.
