(EPICSTORIAN) — Smuggled military uniforms and live ammunition have been intercepted in Sokoto by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
The consignment, hidden among commercial goods, was seized along a known smuggling corridor by officers of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone B, according to the agency.
A statement from NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada confirmed the recovery of military fatigues, boots, and high-caliber ammunition. The identities of those responsible remain unknown, but investigations are underway to determine the intended recipients and routes used.
“Smuggling of military gear and weapons poses a direct threat to national security. These items often find their way into the hands of unauthorized groups,” Maiwada stated.
Efforts to curb the trafficking of restricted items have intensified, with increased surveillance along border communities. Intelligence teams are tracking movements linked to the intercepted shipment, working to uncover any broader networks involved.
Unauthorized circulation of military supplies remains a pressing security concern, particularly in regions affected by insurgency and organized crime.
Smuggling routes have been frequently exploited for illegal arms trade, raising concerns about their potential impact on public safety.
Customs officers called for greater cooperation from local communities, urging residents to report suspicious movements.
Information shared by citizens, according to enforcement officials, plays a key role in disrupting illicit supply chains.
Confiscated items have been transferred to the appropriate authorities for further examination. Updates on the ongoing investigation are expected as security agencies continue efforts to dismantle smuggling operations tied to weapons trafficking
