Car crashes into Christmas market crowd in Germany, dozens injured
(EPICSTORIAN) – A devastating incident occurred in the eastern German city of Magdeburg, where a car ploughed into a crowded Christmas market, leaving at least one person dead and injuring between 60 and 80 others.
According to local public broadcaster MDR, the tragic event has prompted widespread emergency responses across the region.
Authorities confirmed that the driver of the vehicle has been arrested, though their identity and motive remain unclear. Unverified footage circulating on social media depicts the car speeding through the crowded market, sending people fleeing in panic.
Emergency services, including ambulances and police units, are actively treating victims and securing the area.
A spokesperson for Magdeburg city revealed that hospitals across the area are on high alert, preparing for what has been described as a “mass casualty event.” Local police noted that an “extensive operation” is underway to investigate and manage the aftermath.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed deep concern over the incident, stating: “Reports from Magdeburg lead us to fear the worst. My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. We stand by their side and by the side of all Magdeburg residents. My thanks to all the emergency services in these difficult hours.”
Reiner Haseloff, Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, called the incident “terrible, especially now in the days before Christmas.” He is reportedly en route to Magdeburg to support local officials, as revealed by BBC.
