The dead body of an American mountaineer, Bill Stampfl,  who went missing  22 years ago has been discovered be fellow US hikers in Peru.

Stampfl went missing following an avalanche in the Peruvian Andes in 2002. The American mountaineer left home his wife Janet and a son , who said all hope of finding him had been lost.

The climbers had been descending the mountain in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca after an unsuccessful attempt to reach its 22,000 ft summit when they found the body, at about 16,500 ft.

Cooper ,  in an interview with news reporters, said before actually discovering it was a dead body, they saw an object from far off that didn’t completely fuse with the mountain scenery,  and then decided to find out.

“Someone loved him and someone wanted him to come home,” Cooper said.

Cooper looked for the  American mountaineer’s family

“As soon as I found out he was an American climber I knew we had a responsibility to track down the family and give them the news,”  he said.

“I told him I know the location of his dad. I told him about the ring and personal items,” Cooper said

He said the ice had preserved the body and its belongings and Stampfl’s wedding ring, helmet, mountain climbing boots, and jacket were all intact, CNN reported.
