Abuja, Nigeria (Epicstorian News) — Aliko Dangote has officially retired as Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, ending a 20-year tenure that shaped Nigeria’s sugar industry.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the company’s secretary, Temitope Hassan, noting that the retirement will take effect from June 16, 2025.

Dangote, who assumed the role in 2005, led significant expansion efforts and corporate governance reforms.

Under his leadership, Dangote Sugar became a dominant player in West Africa’s sugar market, advancing several Backward Integration Projects (BIP) aimed at reducing Nigeria’s sugar import dependency.

Arnold Ekpe named new Dangote Sugar board chairman

Following a rigorous selection and transition process, the company announced the appointment of Independent Non-Executive Director Arnold Ekpe as the incoming chairman, effective the same day as Dangote’s exit.

“We are pleased to confirm Mr. Arnold Ekpe, former Ecobank CEO and experienced board leader, will assume the role of Chairman of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc effective June 16,” the company said. “His vast experience is expected to steer the company through the next phase of strategic growth.”

Ekpe brings decades of financial sector leadership and is known for driving cross-border operations in emerging markets.

The board extended appreciation to Aliko Dangote for his legacy of excellence and unwavering commitment to industry development.

During his time as Dangote Sugar chairman, the company initiated sustainable projects across Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa states, reinforcing its position in the Nigerian economy.

“We thank Alhaji Aliko Dangote for his years of dedication and leadership that have brought the company to its current height,” the statement concluded.
