Ibom Air Passenger Charged After Assault Incident
The incident began shortly before take-off when Emmanson was instructed by the flight Purser to switch off her mobile phone in accordance with standard aviation safety protocols.
She initially refused until the Pilot-in-Command intervened with an announcement. A fellow passenger then switched off her phone to de-escalate the situation.
Upon landing in Lagos, Emmanson allegedly confronted the Purser who had earlier instructed her. According to a statement by Ibom Air, Emmanson physically assaulted the crew member, including forcibly removing her wig, throwing her glasses to the floor, and using her footwear to strike her. Another crew member who tried to intervene was also slapped.
The airline added that Emmanson attempted to seize a fire extinguisher onboard with the intent to use it as a weapon, describing this as an act to “damage and ground the aircraft.”
Legal Proceedings And Airline Response
Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, confirmed the court charge and remand on social media. Emmanson is currently detained at Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos.
Following the assault, Ibom Air has officially banned Emmanson from flying with the airline. The company reiterated its commitment to enforcing aviation safety regulations and protecting both crew and passengers.
