Two children killed in Miami sailboat crash involving barge near Hibiscus Island waters.
MIAMI — A tragic collision in Biscayne Bay has left two children dead after a barge struck a sailboat carrying young sailors on Monday afternoon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard and Florida officials.
Miami Youth Sailing Foundation Involved in Fatal Crash
The incident occurred between Monument Island and Hibiscus Island, where a barge collided with a sailboat belonging to the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation. Authorities confirmed that six individuals — one adult and five children — were on board the sailboat at the time of the crash. All were thrown into the water.
Rescue teams from local police, fire departments, and the U.S. Coast Guard responded swiftly to the scene. Four children were pulled from the water and transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Tragically, two of the children were pronounced dead upon arrival, while the conditions of the surviving victims have not yet been disclosed.
Authorities Investigate Collision Involving Sailing Program Participants
In a statement, the Miami Yacht Club confirmed the children were participating in a sailing session when the accident occurred. Petty Officer Nicholas Strasburg of the Coast Guard told reporters that the sailboat became trapped underneath the barge during the collision, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
“At this time, details are still emerging, and we are actively gathering all available facts,” the yacht club stated. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of everyone involved.”
Multi-Agency Investigation Underway Into Biscayne Bay Incident
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is leading the investigation with support from the U.S. Coast Guard and local authorities. The ages of the children involved have not yet been publicly released. It remains unclear whether weather, mechanical failure, or human error played a role in the incident.
The fatal collision has raised questions about safety procedures involving commercial maritime operations in recreational areas. Biscayne Bay, a busy waterway popular with boaters, has seen an increase in both recreational and industrial marine traffic.
Community in Mourning Following Deaths in Miami Boating Accident
The community has been left reeling from the tragedy, particularly those connected to the sailing foundation. Parents, club members, and local residents gathered at the Miami Yacht Club late Monday to console one another and await further updates. A memorial is being planned for the children who lost their lives.
This is one of the deadliest recent maritime accidents in the region. According to reports from local and national media, investigators are reviewing vessel logs and interviewing witnesses to determine exactly how the barge came into contact with the sailboat.
Safety Concerns Resurface Amidst Growing Boat Traffic in Florida Waters
This collision follows a series of boating accidents in Florida in recent months, prompting renewed concerns over safety standards and oversight in areas where young sailors are trained.

Maritime safety experts have urged for more stringent regulations and coordination between private sailing programs and commercial operators navigating shared waterways.
