UN expert expresses concern over Iran’s alleged forced disappearance of political prisoners at Evin Prison

UN special rapporteur warns of possible forced disappearance of Evin Prison political detainees in Iran.

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran has raised serious alarm over the possible forced disappearance of several political detainees held at Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison.

Among those reportedly unaccounted for are Iranian-Swedish researcher Ahmadreza Moradi and political activist Hossein Ronaghi, along with his brother.

UN Concern Over Political Prisoners at Evin Prison Deepens

Javaid Rehman, the UN-appointed expert, voiced his concern in a post on social media, stating that there are credible indications the detainees may have been subjected to enforced disappearance.

He warned that this would constitute a grave violation of international law, particularly where detainees are denied contact with their families or legal representation.

Forced Disappearance Allegations Raise Human Rights Red Flags

Families of the affected prisoners have reported a sudden loss of contact and no official updates on their status.

These claims have fueled growing fears that authorities may be deliberately hiding their whereabouts, a tactic widely recognized as enforced disappearance.

Ahmadreza Moradi, known for his academic work and dual nationality, has reportedly not been seen or heard from in recent days. Similarly, the whereabouts of Hossein Ronaghi and his brother remain unknown, prompting urgent calls for transparency from the Iranian authorities.

Iran Human Rights Advocates Demand Transparency and Accountability

Human rights groups have condemned the possible disappearances, urging the Iranian government to immediately disclose the status and location of the missing prisoners.

The rapporteur noted that such practices may amount to torture, particularly when families are left in prolonged uncertainty.

Evin Prison has long drawn international criticism for its treatment of political detainees, with numerous past reports documenting abuse, solitary confinement, and denial of medical care.

The prison’s opaque operations continue to draw attention from both human rights monitors and foreign governments.

Global Community Urged to Respond to Iran’s Rights Violations

The UN expert’s warning has reignited calls for international accountability. Diplomatic missions have been urged to intervene and demand access to detainees, particularly those holding dual citizenship.
