The flash flood hit at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time, sweeping away a community kitchen and a security post in Chasoti, a key stop for pilgrims.

Many of the victims were devotees who had gathered for lunch when the water surged unexpectedly. The Machail Yatra is a prominent pilgrimage, drawing devotees from various regions to worship the manifestation of Goddess Durga. Reuters reported the incident with initial casualty figures.

Rescue Operations and Emergency Response

Authorities have mobilized local police, disaster response teams, the Indian Army, and Air Force units to conduct search and rescue operations. Efforts are ongoing to locate the missing and provide medical assistance to the injured.

Authorities confirmed that army and air force teams were activated immediately following the disaster.

Meteorological Factors Behind Kishtwar Cloudburst

The Indian Meteorological Department defines a cloudburst as a sudden, intense downpour exceeding 100 mm of rain in a very short period. These events often trigger rapid floods, landslides, and extensive destruction in mountainous areas like Kishtwar, where terrain and infrastructure are highly vulnerable.

The regional weather office in Srinagar has warned of continued heavy rainfall in several Kashmir regions, urging residents to avoid loose structures, old trees, and unstable electric poles due to potential mudslides and flash floods.

Impact on Local Communities and Pilgrimage

Chasoti serves as the last vehicular stop along the Machail Mata pilgrimage route. The flood has caused significant disruption to the pilgrimage and damaged local infrastructure, including homes, roads, and temporary facilities for pilgrims. This incident follows a similar disaster in Uttarakhand, highlighting the increasing vulnerability of Himalayan regions to monsoon-induced disasters.

Pilgrimage organizers and local authorities are working to restore access and provide support for affected individuals.

Government and Administrative Response
