Four Killed Including NYPD Officer in Midtown Manhattan Shooting

NEW YORK — Four individuals, including a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, were killed in a shooting Monday evening at a high-rise corporate building in Midtown Manhattan, authorities confirmed.

The shooting occurred at 345 Park Avenue, a 634-foot office tower home to major firms including the National Football League (NFL) and Blackstone.

The gunman, tentatively identified as a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Law enforcement said he acted alone and carried a long rifle into the building. Surveillance footage showed him entering the premises dressed in dark attire and sunglasses, carrying what police described as a long gun.

The NYPD officer, who was assigned to a Bronx precinct and responding to the scene, was shot in the back and later died at Bellevue Hospital. Two civilians were also shot, one of whom remains in critical condition, while the other is expected to recover, according to police sources.

Authorities say the suspect’s motive remains unclear. A search of the building was conducted floor by floor to confirm that there were no additional threats.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that the shooter had a valid concealed carry permit for a handgun and previously held a now-expired private investigator license. The firearm used in the shooting was not registered in New York, investigators noted.

Victims of Midtown Manhattan shooting and Response Confirmed by NY Officials

Mayor Eric Adams acknowledged the “active shooter investigation” and confirmed via social media that police had secured the scene. “If you are in the building, please stay where you are,” he said in a video statement

. Lawmakers including Senator Chuck Schumer, Representative Hakeem Jeffries, and Governor Kathy Hochul expressed condolences and support for first responders.

Video captured by media outlets showed a massive police presence and emergency personnel outside the skyscraper, located just blocks from Grand Central Terminal and Rockefeller Center. Park Avenue between East 51st and 52nd Streets was closed off during the incident, as crowds gathered behind police lines.

Federal and Local Agencies Launch Joint Investigation

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s New York office confirmed it is assisting the NYPD with its investigation. A command post has been established alongside the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York to manage evidence collection and review of surveillance footage.

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the scene was declared contained shortly after officers entered the building. Authorities recovered the suspect’s vehicle nearby and are conducting forensic analysis.

Officials have not released the identities of the deceased civilians pending family notifications.

Incident Sparks Renewed Focus on Gun Laws

This latest act of gun violence has drawn attention to firearm accessibility and regulation across states. Although New York maintains strict gun control laws, the shooter’s ability to enter the building armed has raised concerns about gaps in national enforcement mechanisms and cross-state license recognition.
