The confrontation reportedly began when a woman living in the same compound as the victim insulted him, labeling him a drunkard. She then allegedly spat on him and slapped him.

In response, Confidence slapped her back. The woman then reportedly called her boyfriend, Godspower, an OSPAC operative, who arrived at the scene with another man.

According to Chiwenkpe Ikechi, the elder brother of the deceased, the men assaulted Confidence with sticks and machetes, striking his chest, stomach, and back, until he began to bleed profusely.

“They planned it, they also did it and killed the young boy,” Chiwenkpe told journalists during an interview.

He further alleged that the OSPAC operatives pointed a gun at him and their mother, warning them not to pursue justice, claiming “the case won’t go anywhere.”

Police Probe Continues in Rivers Vigilante Murder Case

The case has reignited concerns over the unchecked power of vigilante groups operating under the guise of community security outfits such as OSPAC in Rivers State.

The violent killing follows a recent trend of security personnel acting outside the bounds of law enforcement.

A previous related incident occurred when gunmen attacked an OSPAC office in Rivers, resulting in the death of a Special Intelligence Squad operative.

These developments have increased calls for greater accountability and oversight of non-state security actors.
