
Bolaji Dada empowers 700 widows with cash grants and tools at Lagos State vocational event.
Lagos, Nigeria (EPICSTORIAN) — The Lagos State Government has empowered 700 widows with ₦50,000 each, totaling ₦35 million in direct support, as part of its 2025 International Widows Day activities.
The event was held at the Isheri Skills Acquisition Centre and led by
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada.
Lagos Widows Empowerment Reflects Inclusive Governance and Localized Support Goals
In her keynote speech, Dada described the widows as “pillars of many households,” emphasizing that widowhood should not equate to hardship. “This is not just a commemoration; it is a solemn call to action,” she said.
Beyond the cash support, the Lagos widows empowerment program included vocational training under the
Livelihood Economic Empowerment Programme run by the
Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA).
The four-week course ran across Lagos’s five divisions, offering practical skills in:
- Fashion design
- Catering
- Soap production
- Hairdressing
- Tie & dye

“These programmes are intentionally structured to be time-efficient and practical, recognising that widows often carry the dual burden of being caregivers and breadwinners,” Dada explained. The initiative aligns with best practices advocated by global women-focused entities like
UN Women.
Micro-Grants and Start-Up Kits Expand Impact of Lagos Widows Empowerment
Women who completed the training received starter kits and were linked to Micro-Enterprise Support Initiatives. These included additional grants, business tools, and access to
Lagos State’s SME support platforms, enhancing their capacity to launch or expand small-scale businesses.
Social Services and Legal Aid Strengthen Post-Empowerment Widow Support

Dada emphasized that the Lagos widows empowerment framework doesn’t stop at financial or vocational help. WAPA also provides
psychosocial counselling and legal advisory services through its
Family Social Services and Domestic Violence Unit.
“You are seen. You are valued. You are supported,” she assured the women. “On behalf of Governor
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, I salute your strength and assure you that Lagos State will continue to stand with you.”
