Police arrest 13 suspects over gang rape, forced abortion, and death of teenage girl in Misau.

Bauchi, Nigeria — Authorities in Bauchi State have arrested 13 individuals in connection with the tragic death of an 18-year-old girl who was allegedly gang-raped, forcibly subjected to an abortion, and later died due to complications.

The Bauchi State Police Command, in a statement issued on Thursday by its Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Wakil, confirmed that the suspects were apprehended in Misau, a town in Misau Local Government Area, following weeks of investigation.

Gang Rape and Abortion in Bauchi Lead to Teen’s Death in Misau

The police received credible intelligence on April 4, 2025, at approximately 9:00 a.m. indicating that the crime occurred several months ago. Wakil disclosed that two men—Usman Umar (22) and Sallau Ayuba (21)—allegedly lured the victim and engaged in repeated sexual intercourse with her at various locations, including Mahmood Lodge in Misau.

According to the police statement, when the young men discovered that the victim had become pregnant, they sought help from another man, Abubakar Mohammed (35), a second-year student at A.D. Rufai College for Islamic and Legal Studies, Misau. He was reportedly paid N40,000 to terminate the pregnancy.

“After the injection administered by Mohammed, the girl lost consciousness and developed severe complications,” Wakil explained. “Her family rushed her to General Hospital Misau. She was later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Azare, where she was pronounced dead.”

Further investigation revealed that the abortion had not only been conducted without medical clearance but was also carried out under dangerous conditions, leading to the victim’s untimely death.

Suspects Confess to Roles in Crime

Following the report to the authorities, police moved swiftly to arrest Umar, Ayuba, and Mohammed, who allegedly confessed to the crime. During questioning, the suspects provided names of additional accomplices who had either direct or indirect involvement in the crime.

The police later identified the other suspects as Alkali Kawu, Maule Mai Ride, Mai Tomatoes, Danguli, Yakubu, Kura (a civil servant), and four others. All are currently under investigation at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Misau.

“The Command reaffirms its commitment and steadfastness in carrying out its statutory responsibility to ensure justice is served accordingly,” said Wakil, adding that further updates will follow once investigations are concluded.

The victim’s identity has been withheld for privacy reasons, but the story has sparked widespread outrage across Nigeria, with human rights groups and local communities calling for swift prosecution of those involved.

This incident comes amid growing concerns about gender-based violence, unsafe abortions, and sexual exploitation in Nigeria.

In recent times, Nigerian authorities have reiterated the need for community awareness, stricter law enforcement, and improved access to reproductive health services.
